'Die Dokumentation ländervergleichender Datensätze auf Variablenebene unter Berücksichtigung des DDI Standards verlangt vielfältige Möglichkeiten der Hinterlegung von Informationen, die je Land verschieden sein können. Das ZA entwickelte dazu die Software ZA Dataset Documentation Manager (DSDM). Diese ermöglicht den Import von SPSS- und XML-Informationen, die Eingabe und Pflege der Dokumentation sowie den Export im DDI-XML-Format für die elektronische Publikation in verschiedenen Software-Systemen und für die langfristige Sicherung. Gleichzeitig wird eine Perspektive der Zusammenarbeit des Archivs mit Primärforschern und Projektpartnern für die umfassende Dokumentation von einfachen und komplexen Studien eröffnet.' Purpose - Data sharing is key for replication and re-use in empirical research. Scientific journals can play a central role by establishing data policies and providing technologies. This paper analyzes the factors which influence data sharing by investigating journal data policies and the behavior of authors in sociology. Design/methodology/approach - The websites of 140 sociology journals were consulted to check their data policy. The results are compared with similar studies from political science and economics. A broad selection of articles published in five selected journals over a period of two years are examined to determine whether authors really cite and share their data and the factors which are related to this. Findings - Although only a few sociology journals have explicit data policies, most journals make reference to a common policy supplied by their association of publishers. Among the journals selected, relatively few articles provide data citations and even fewer make data available - this is true both for journals with and without data policy. But authors writing for journals with higher impact factors and with data policies are more likely to cite data and to make it really accessible. Originality/value - No study of journal data policies has been undertaken to date for the domain of sociology. A comparison of authors' behaviors regarding data availability, data citation, and data accessibility for journals with or without a data policy provides useful information about the factors which improve data sharing.

Der Continuity Guide der deutschen Wahlforschung erschließt einen Datenbestand, der mittlerweile 30 Wahlstudien aus den Jahren 1949 bis 1998 mit über 9000 Variablen umfasst. Informationen über die Datensätze sind in einer leicht zugänglichen Form über den ZA CodebookExplorer darstellbar. Die Verfasser zeigen anhand von Beispielen die Möglichkeiten der verschiedenen Formulare dieses Programms auf. Hierzu zählen die Optionen Studienansicht, Studienbeschreibungsansicht, Fragebogenansicht, Auswertungsansicht, Kategorienansicht, Trendansicht sowie "technische" Optionen wie Drucken oder Hilfe. Die Verfasser geben einen Überblick über den Forschungs- und Serviceschwerpunkt des ZA im Bereich der empirischen Wahlforschung. Der Datenbestand auf diesem Gebiet umfasst die Wahlstudien zu den Bundestagswahlen 1949 bis 1998, das German Election Data Project, das Politbarometer der Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, Studien zu den Europawahlen 1989 und 1994, Datenbestände des International Committee for Research into Elections and Representative Democracy (ICORE) und der Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES), eine Sammlung von Parteiprogrammen bis 1988 sowie Wahlstudien, die im Kontext anderer komparativer Studien durchgeführt wurden. Mit dem Continuity Guide der Deutschen Wahlstudien wurde der Weg von einer Sammlung von Einzelstudien zum Aufbau einer kohärenten Datenbasis beschritten, die inzwischen 30 Wahlstudien mit über 9000 Variablen umfasst. In this article, we present documentation of the georeferenced social science survey data that are spatially linked to geospatial data attributes. We introduce the challenges of documentation, as different metadata standards are used for both data sources: social science survey data and geospatial data. In particular, we analyze the extent to which the social sciences metadata standard DDI Lifecycle is capable of incorporating the geosciences metadata standard ISO 19115. We find that the most challenging attributes to describe are those concerning the geographic structure of the geospatial data, especially if they stem from different sources. To navigate these issues, we developed and evaluated four workaround approaches which we demonstrate in a case study on the georeferenced German General Social Survey. Because not all of the approaches apply equally to every research project and institution, we provide a scheme to assist in making informed and weighted decisions.

Attitudes on climate change and the protection of the environment have been found to relate in different ways to the current economic and social situation of the respondents. This presentation will describe people's attitudes by analyzing surveys on the topic of climate change and the protection of the environment, including the recent International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) and the Swiss Environmental Panel Study (due to time restrictions, the presentation only shows ISSP data results). A closer look will be taken at the economic opinions and willingness to pay higher prices or taxes and their relationship to climate change attitudes. In addition, respondent's trust in people and different institutions will be analyzed. A structural equation analysis is performed to highlight the relations between those concepts. The results will show that support for a better economy and private enterprises are related to lower environmental and climate change concerns, support for paying higher prices or taxes is related to more environmental concerns and higher trust in people and institutions is related to deeper environmental concerns. After that, several demographic characteristics will be used to show if the results are stable when controlling for these. Demographic variables used are age, gender, education level, employment status, income, and political left-right placement. It can be shown that the factors of economic opinions, willingness to pay, and trust in people and institutions all relate to the environmental and climate change attitudes.

This Python script can be used to rehydrate Tweets from Tweet IDs. It uses the Twython library to access the Twitter API.
The script was built to support rehydration for the project "Geotagged Twitter posts from the United States: A tweet collection to investigate representativeness" by Jürgen Pfeffer and Fred Morstatter. Argument is a zip file with text files in it with tweed ids (one per line).
Output is a text file with number of found tweets per county.

Linking Study Descriptions to the Linked Open Data Cloud

Existing question data banks for social science survey research mainly operate at the national level. National question data banks serve their constituent research communities and only include questions from surveys that have been conducted within their own countries. This limits the pool of available questions to draw from, as well as possibilities for cross-national comparative research, an increasingly important aim of social science investigation. The CESSDA EuroQuestion-Bank (EQB) project implements a cross-national question bank with a central search facility across all CESSDA's survey holdings to display survey questions in different languages in a user-friendly application. A wide variety of surveys, survey questions, and question-related information are provided by CESSDA Service Providers (SPs), who contribute their documentation by using DDI standardized metadata. This paper outlines functionalities of the EQB application, technical aspects of the EQB architecture and introduces the EQB metadata schema.
